Better Off Broken

Matt Maher opens with a string of questions that all point the same direction: "what good's a heart if it don't break, what good's a soul if it don't ache, what good are eyes if they can't see." Brokenness gets treated as functional here, not just painful.

"Love came crashing in, oh bombs away, blowing up my world from the fallout I can say I'm better off broken" turns a violent image into a grateful one — the explosion is what let something in, not just what tore something down.

"What good is grace if it's not free, what good's a cure if it's not healing, what good is faith without a need" makes the theology explicit: grace only means something against real need, which is exactly what Paul's letter to the Ephesians says salvation by grace looks like. The Psalms' promise that God stays near to the brokenhearted gives the whole song its quiet confidence — that breaking isn't the opposite of being found, it's what being found usually requires.
