What a Friend

Song Meaning

Matt Maher borrows his title straight from an 1855 hymn, but he earns the phrase again by grounding it in specifics most people recognize on sight: "everybody has trials and temptations, everybody knows heartbreak, isolation." The verses read almost like a list of the ordinary weight people carry into any given room, before the chorus offers somewhere to set it down.

"East to west my sins are gone" borrows its geometry from Scripture on purpose — east and west never meet, unlike north and south, which makes the distance the song is describing genuinely limitless rather than just "far away." That precision matters more than it looks; it's the difference between a vague comfort and an actual claim.

The refrain that follows — "no more betrayal, for He is faithful... my cup runneth over" — answers isolation with the opposite experience: being filled rather than emptied out. By the last chorus, "His heart is my home" has shifted from a nice line to the song's real argument: security isn't a feeling you chase, it's a place you're already welcome.

Everybody has trials

And temptations

Everybody knows heart break

Isolation

But we can lay our burdens down

Lay our burdens down

What a friend we have in Jesus

East to west my sins are gone

I see grace on every horizon

And forever and ever

His heart is my home

Everybody has fears

Everybody got worries

Everybody knows sorrow

Devastation

But we can lay our burdens down

Lay our burdens down

What a friend we have in Jesus

East to west my sins are gone

I see grace on every horizon

And forever and ever His heart is my home

No more betrayal

For He is faithful

He fills me up and my cup runneth over

No more betrayal

For He is faithful

How He has proven it over and over

No more betrayal

For He is faithful

He fills me up and my cup runneth over

No more betrayal

For He is faithful

How He has proven it over and over

What a friend we have in Jesus

East to west my sins are gone

I see grace on every horizon

And forever and ever His heart is my home

What a friend we have in Jesus

East to west my sins are gone

I see grace on every horizon

And forever and ever

His heart is my home

Forever and ever His heart is my home
