Come To The Water

Song Meaning

Matt Maher sets Isaiah 55:1 to music with almost no paraphrase: "let all who thirst... come to the water... without money, without price." The prophet's invitation was originally addressed to an exiled nation being offered restoration free of charge, and the song keeps that same logic — value offered precisely where the ability to pay for it is absent.

"Let all who toil... let all who are weary, let them come to the Lord" reaches for Matthew 11:28's invitation, "come to me, all you who labor and are heavy burdened, and I will give you rest." "I will run to you, my Lord," closing the song, flips the direction of the earlier verses — after four verses of invitation extended outward, the song ends with the singer's own response, running rather than only being called.

O let all who thirst
Let them come to the water
And let all who have nothing
Let them come to the Lord
Without money, without price
Why should you pay the price
Except for the Lord?

And let all who seek
Let them come to the water
And let all who have nothing
Let them come to the Lord
Without money, without strife
Why should you spend your life
Except for the Lord?

And let all who toil
Let them come to the water
And let all who are weary
Let them come to the Lord
All who labor without rest
How can your soul find rest
Except for the Lord?

And let all the poor
Let them come to the water
And let the ones who are laden
Let them come to the Lord
Bring the children without might
Easy the load and light
Come to the Lord

Come to the Lord
Come to the Lord
Come to the Lord

I will run to you, I will run to you
I will run to you my Lord

I will run to you, I will run to you
I will run to you my Lord
