Christmas Is Here

Michael W. Smith's “Christmas Is Here” starts with a countdown from ten and a shout of “Here we go!” before settling into a winter scene. The first verse paints frost on the window panes, fires aglow and children laughing down the lane, while the second adds tinsel on the evergreen, gifts “as far as the eye can see,” and snow gently falling. The details are domestic and warm, the picture of a household getting ready.

The chorus brings the reason into focus: “Ring, ring all the bells, Christmas is here. Sing, sing from your heart, the Savior is born, the stories are all true.” A later section names him directly as “Light of the world” and “Emmanuel,” and says “angels rejoice, redemption upon us.” The song closes with an invitation repeated in short phrases, “come and rejoice, come let us sing,” and a run of hallelujahs.
