Brave

Nichole Nordeman opens "Brave" describing comfort as a trap rather than a virtue — "the gate is wide, the road is paved in moderation, the crowd is kind and quick to pull you in" — deliberately inverting the usual image of the wide gate as danger into something that looks safe precisely because everyone's already there. "Welcome to the middle ground, you're safe and sound" is delivered almost sarcastically, naming safety as the very thing being questioned.

"It's been fear that ties me down to everything, but it's been love, your love, that cuts the strings" credits an external love with the courage the singer couldn't produce alone, rather than framing bravery as self-generated resolve. "I am small, and I speak when I'm spoken to" admits smallness honestly before pivoting to willingness — the song doesn't claim newfound confidence, only newfound risk-taking despite the smallness remaining.

"I've never known a fire that didn't begin with a flame, every storm will start with just a drop of rain" argues by analogy that small beginnings are simply how significant things start, not a sign of insufficient faith. "If you believe in me, that changes everything" ends the song by locating the actual source of transformation outside the singer entirely.
