Hallelujah, Our God Reigns
Song Meaning
Passion opens with creation imagery before turning to the cross — "behold the mighty breath of God, it calmed the seas and hung the stars, that very breath inside our hearts." The image reaches back to Genesis 1:2's account of God's breath, or spirit, moving over the waters at the very start, the same breath now placed inside the singer rather than only over creation generally.
"All that has breath, come praise the Lord" quotes Psalm 150:6 almost word for word — the psalm's final verse, closing out the entire book of Psalms with the widest possible invitation to worship. "What kind of king would die for us?" keeps the second verse from staying abstract about the cross; it's posed as an actual question, one the chorus's repeated "Hallelujah" functions as the answer to rather than avoiding.
Behold the mighty breath of God
It calmed the seas and hung the stars
That very breath inside our hearts
Behold our God
He is the anthem of our praise
For we were born to bless His name
All the earth and angels sing
Behold our God
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, our God reigns
Behold the wonder of the cross
For Jesus counted up a cost
What kind of king would die for us?
This is our God
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, our God reigns
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, our God reigns
All that has breath, come praise the Lord
All that has breath, come praise the Lord
All that has breath, come praise the Lord
All that has breath, come praise the Lord
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, our God reigns
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, our God reigns
All that has breath, come praise the Lord
All that has breath, come praise the Lord
All that has breath, come praise the Lord
All that has breath, come praise the Lord
All that has breath, come praise the Lord
All that has breath, come praise the Lord
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, our God reigns
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, our God reigns
