Mystery
Song Meaning
Passion, joined by Charlie Hall, builds this song almost entirely out of ancient liturgical language rather than original lyrics: "sweet Jesus Christ my sanity, sweet Jesus Christ my clarity, bread of heaven, broken for me, cup of salvation held up to drink."
"Christ has died and Christ is risen and Christ will come again" is the mystery of faith acclamation used in communion liturgies for centuries, sung here as the song's actual chorus rather than a spoken response.
"Celebrate his death and rising, lift your eyes, proclaim his coming" turns Paul's own instruction about the Lord's Supper — that eating the bread and drinking the cup proclaims his death until he returns — directly into a sung command.
The song never develops past its two repeated sections, choosing instead to let the same three-part statement — death, resurrection, return — settle in through repetition rather than being explained or expanded on.
Sweet Jesus Christ my sanity
Sweet Jesus Christ my clarity
Bread of heaven, broken for me
Cup of salvation held up to drink
Jesus the Mystery
Christ has died and
Christ is risen
And Christ will come again
Christ has died and
Christ is risen
And Christ will come again
Sweet Jesus Christ my sanity
Sweet Jesus Christ my clarity
Bread of heaven, broken for me
Cup of salvation held up to drink
Jesus the Mystery
Christ has died and
Christ is risen
And Christ will come again
Christ has died and
Christ is risen
And Christ will come again
Celebrate his death and rising
Lift your eyes, proclaim his coming
Celebrate his death and rising
Lift you eyes, lift your eyes
[repeat]
Christ has died and
Christ is risen
And Christ will come again
Christ has died and
Christ is risen
And Christ will come again
