"Let my people go, said let my people go" lifts Exodus 5:1's demand to Pharaoh almost unchanged, while "let justice roll on like a river" — the song's title image — comes straight from Amos 5:24's command that justice not trickle but roll continuously. "Like a stone from the mouth of the grave" adds a resurrection image to the exodus one, stacking two liberation stories — from slavery, from death — under the same rolling, unstoppable verb.
