We Three Kings (We're Not Lost)

Rend Collective keeps John Henry Hopkins's 1857 carol essentially untouched through its familiar verses — gold, frankincense, myrrh, the star leading the magi to Bethlehem — before adding an original refrain that reframes the whole story: 'in the dark we're not lost, when it's hard we're not lost, don't lose heart, we're never truly lost.' That's a small but real addition, turning a song about three travelers who found their way by following a star into a claim about anyone still searching now.

'Star with royal beauty bright, westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light' keeps Matthew 2:2's account of the magi following the star to Bethlehem intact as the literal story, while the new refrain generalizes its logic outward — if the star didn't fail the wise men even across a long, uncertain journey, the same guidance is available to whoever's still traveling in the dark now. The carol's closing 'Alleluia, the earth will sing' keeps the arrangement from settling for reassurance alone; it ends on worship, not just comfort.
