Need To Know You

Restlessness starts the song honestly: "don't know why I run away and fight Your loving arms, keep You at a distance when I need You in my heart." Rend Collective follows with a request that sums up the whole prayer, "take my hand and lead me home," and a verse that casts God as a shepherd: "will You be my shepherd, Father? Will You keep me close?"

The refrain is a need stated in the plainest images. "I need to know You so much more, like a desert needs the rain," it says, and asks, "come and fill me up again," closing with "closer and closer, Lord." A short passage adds comfort for lonely stretches, "I know I am not alone, You are right beside me in the sunshine or the snow."

The final section turns from need to delight. God is "the playfulness in my heart," "the joyfulness in my bones," and the singer's song from "the rising to the setting sun," "the melody in my soul," "the praise filling up my lungs." The shift from thirst to joy feels like an answer to the prayer. Psalm 23:1 gives the shepherd, Psalm 63:1 the desert thirst for God, and Jeremiah 29:13 promises that those who seek Him with all their heart will find Him.
