This Little Light Of Mine
Song Meaning
Rend Collective's recording is barely more than a single line, sung three times through with almost nothing added: "this little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine." There's no verse building an argument for why, no bridge complicating the decision — just the decision, repeated.
That simplicity is the whole tradition this song comes from. Harry Dixon Loes wrote the original spiritual to be sung by children, and its brevity was never a limitation; it's built to be memorized in one hearing and repeated for a lifetime.
Jesus' own instruction to let light shine before others, so they see good works and give glory to God, gives the song its entire theology in one borrowed image, and his description of a city on a hill that can't be hidden backs up the confidence behind "I'm gonna let it shine" rather than keeping it covered. Few songs on this site say less and still say everything they need to.
This little light of mine
I'm gonna let it shine
This little light of mine
I'm gonna let it shine
This little light of mine
I'm gonna let it shine,
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine
