Nothing But The Blood
Song Meaning
Selah's recording of Robert Lowry's 1876 hymn keeps the question-and-answer structure that gives the song its shape — "what can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus" — repeated rather than resolved once and moved past. Hebrews 9:22's claim that "apart from shedding of blood there is no remission" sits directly behind the hymn's insistent refusal to offer any other answer.
"That makes me white as snow" reaches for Isaiah 1:18's promise that sins "as scarlet" can become "as white as snow," while the hymn's repeated "no other fount I know" echoes 1 John 1:7's claim that "the blood of Jesus Christ, his Son, cleanses us from all sin" — one source named, every alternative ruled out by the same repeated line.
What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
Oh! Precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow
No other fount I know
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
