Standing On The Promises
Song Meaning
Selah's medley pulls three separate hymn texts into one arrangement, and the seams barely show because they're all making the same argument from different angles. "Standing on the promises that cannot fail" leans on Scripture's authority directly — "by the living word of God I shall prevail" — while "leaning on the everlasting arms" reaches for something more physical, a place to actually rest weight on.
The final section shifts the question from confidence to accountability: "are you washed in the blood, in the soul-cleansing blood of the Lamb? Are your garments spotless, are they white as snow?" It's a pointed turn for a medley that spent its first half declaring certainty, now asking the listener to check whether that certainty applies to them.
Moses' blessing over Israel pictures God's arms as underneath and everlasting — support that doesn't run out. Peter's letter calls God's promises precious and very great, and John's claim that Christ's blood purifies from all sin answers the medley's closing question directly. Three hymns, one same foundation.
Standing on the promises of Christ my King,
Through eternal ages let His praises ring.
Glory in the highest I will shout and sing
I'm standing on the promises of God.
Standing on the promises that cannot fail
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail.
By the living word of God I shall prevail.
I'm standing on the promises of God.
Standing, standing, standing on the promises of God my Savior.
Standing, standing, standing on the promises of God.
What a fellowship, what a joy divine,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.
What a blessedness, what a peace is mine,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.
I'm leaning, leaning
Safe and secure from all alarms.
I'm leaning, I'm leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms
Are you washed in the blood in the soul-cleansing blood of the Lamb?
Are your garments spotless, are the white as snow?
Are you washed in the blood of the lamb?
Yes, I'm standing, standing, standing on the promises of God my Savior.
I'm standing, standing, standing on the promises of God.
Yes, I'm standing, standing?
I'm standing on the promises of God!
