How Great Thou Art

Selah's recording of Carl Boberg's 1885 hymn moves between English and Kituba, the second language verse carrying identical content rather than new material. "I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed" reaches for Psalm 8:3's wonder at considering "your heavens, the work of your fingers... what is man, that you think of him?"

"Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee" echoes Psalm 19:1's claim that "the heavens declare the glory of God," the hymn's whole structure built around creation prompting worship rather than only doctrine prompting it. Singing the same chorus in two languages makes the point visually as well as audibly — the song's claim about God's greatness isn't confined to one culture's expression of it.
