On The Mountain

Climbing frames the whole song. The singer has spent a lifetime on the slope and is still "only at the bottom of the mountain," whose peak rises "into the clouds and out of my sight." The refrain admits the limits plainly, "my hands cannot reach it / And my mind can't comprehend it," then answers with a promise: "my soul is gonna get there one day." Repeating that line again and again gives the track the pace of a steady walk uphill.

The middle of the song turns to prayer. "These shoes are gonna need some help," he says, asking to make it to "the top of your mountain." Company appears too: "Many feet have gone before us / With a habit of faith and courage," and they will meet the climber at the "road's end." A later verse gives God the encouraging voice, telling a tired traveler, when the summit "feels so far," to "just hold onto the mountain."

Hebrews 12:1 pictures believers surrounded by those who ran before, Isaiah 2:3 speaks of going up to the mountain of the Lord, and Psalm 121:1 lifts its eyes to the hills. The song joins those images with a settled hope that the arrival is certain even when the view is not.
