Boundaries

Skillet's "Boundaries" builds its imagery around a person who is at once "closed and open," praying for rain over a desolate stretch of land and reaching to pull back curtains that have kept something out. The chorus turns that inward posture inside out: the addressed "You" has no boundaries, crossing and even crashing the borders the speaker has drawn. The second verse shifts the picture toward water — a dam bursting into ocean waves, black water cleaning a highway, and a strange rest that comes in being washed away. Twice the speaker resolves to "let me go" and let the walls melt, a surrender that is less defeat than relief. Near the end the song widens its scope, insisting that this presence is more than everything outside and everything inside the speaker, before the final lines collapse the distance altogether: "I have no borders from you." The language is spare and elemental — rain, curtains, dams, borders — and the mood moves from guarded petition to something closer to awe at a love or presence that refuses to be contained. It closes on the image of a self with no border left to defend.
