Salvation

Skillet's “Salvation” begins in a dark pit: “All alone, lost in this abyss, crawling in the dark,” with a thirst that nothing nearby can satisfy. The singer is not sure the one he calls on is close, asking “Are you far?” and “Will you come to my rescue?” yet adds that he can't give up. That tension between fear of being left and refusal to quit drives the first half.

The chorus changes the register. “I feel you keeping me alive” is a statement of dependence, and the repeated word “salvation” works as both name and confession. The second verse brings an admission: he has been out from under who he is and wants to be, and he asks whether he pushed too far when he “turned my back on you.” The bridge piles up verbs of nearness, hold me, heal me, keep me near, before the final choruses promise a heart that will burn for the one who rescues.

The images are familiar from the Psalms: the pit and the mire in Psalm 40:2, thirst for God in a dry land in Psalm 63:1, and the Lord as light and salvation in Psalm 27:1. The language is intense and devotional, so it reads naturally as the prayer of someone who has wandered and is crying out to come home.
