Yabo - Praise | But We Trust in the Name of The Lord
Song Meaning
Solomon Lange opens with Psalm 20:7 quoted almost word for word: "some trust in chariots, some trust in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord." The contrast the psalm draws between military strength and God's name gets updated in the second verse to modern equivalents — "some trust in their skills, others trust in their kins."
"If the Lord doesn't build a house, then we labor in vain... if the Lord doesn't watch the city, then we stay awake in vain" pulls Psalm 127:1 directly into the song, its two clauses about building and guarding kept intact. The bridge shifts into Hausa — "yabo daga zuchiya" ("praise from my heart"), "godiya daga zuchiya" ("thanksgiving from my heart") — closing the song in a second language without changing its central claim.
Some trust in horses
But we trust in the name of the Lord
Some trust in their skills,
Others trust in their kins
But we trust in the name of the Lord
When the arm of flesh will fail them,
We'll still be standing tall
Cos we trust in the name of the Lord
When they say there is a casting down,
We will say there is a lifting up
Cos we trust in the name of the Lord
Menene zan baka masoyi na
Domin kaunar ka, zuwa gareni
Menene zan baka mai ceto na
Domin alherin ka zuwa gareni
If the Lord doesn't build a house, then we labor in vain
But we trust in the name of the Lord
If the Lord doesn't watch the city, then we stay awake in vain
But we trust in the name of the Lord
Greater is he who is in me, than he who is in the world
I triumph in the name of the Lord
Blow the trumpet in Zion
Sound the alarm on the holy mountain
We will never be afraid
We've got the victory
We've got the victory forever
Blow the trumpet in Zion
Sound the alarm on the holy mountain
We will never be afraid
We’ve got the victory
We’ve got the victory forever
