What A Mighty God

Steve Crown's “What A Mighty God” is a Nigerian gospel praise song that moves between English and Yoruba. It opens with the words awesome wonder is your name, none can do the things you do, and the congregation says they stand in awe of him. The chorus is the title, what a mighty God you are.

The singers call Jesus the King, declare victory in his name and say he is God all by himself. A longer section celebrates his titles, listing him as a miracle worker, the Great I Am, King of kings and the name above all other names. A call in Yoruba names him as Oba, meaning king, and uses Kabiyesi, a traditional royal salutation reserved for a ruler whose word is not questioned. The leader then calls the crowd to say Jesus, sing Jesus, precious Jesus, the Savior of the universe and the Savior of my soul. The last verse says heaven and earth adore him and angels bow before his holy name, then invites the crowd to lift it up one more time. The song depends on call and response and rising energy, and it is easy for a large gathering to join. It would suit a praise and worship night, a celebration service or a time of thanksgiving after a hard year.
