Come Home

Tauren Wells wrote “Come Home” for people who have been hurt by church. The first verse speaks to someone who is wounded: “It's painful when your heart is disillusioned and you find out all your heroes, they're just human, and they know not what they do.” The second verse says that those who divide others “are the casualties in the name of religion,” and he does not argue with the listener who would feel safer at a distance.

The pre-chorus is an apology from the one singing: “I know that you've seen a sin of hypocrisy, that's the human condition, that's not God's heartbeat. I'm sorry.” The chorus follows with an open door, “If you want to leave, if you gotta go, I'll be right here when you come home.” A later verse speaks to someone trying to find the reason behind it all and says God will answer, “He loves you more than you ever imagined.” The bridge welcomes doubt: “You can bring your doubts, you can think out loud, love will hear you out.” The song ends on the single word “Come home.”

The father running to meet his son is Luke 15:20. Forgiving those who know not what they do is Luke 23:34, and God being near the brokenhearted is Psalm 34:18.
