How Great Is Our God (An Easter Moment)
Song Meaning
Travis Cottrell's "How Great Is Our God (An Easter Moment)" opens with a spoken passage straight from Luke's gospel — the angel's words to the women at the empty tomb: "fear not ye; for I know that ye seek Jesus, who hath been crucified. He is not here, for He is risen." The song doesn't ease into the resurrection; it starts there.
"The splendor of a king, clothed in majesty... He wraps Himself in light, and darkness tries to hide and trembles at His voice" pairs the familiar Chris Tomlin worship anthem with that Easter framing, so lines usually sung about God's general greatness land specifically as resurrection language here — darkness trembling at a voice that had just walked out of a tomb.
"The Lion and the Lamb" borrows John's vision in Revelation of Christ as both conquering King and sacrificed Lamb in the same title, two images that don't usually belong together held side by side without resolving the tension between them. "Age to age He stands, and time is in His hands, beginning and the End" closes the song on the same scale the opening Bible reading already established — not just an event two thousand years old, but a King still reigning now.
And the angel answered and said unto the women, "Fear not ye; for I know that ye seek Jesus, who hath been crucified. He is not here, for He is risen, even as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly and tell His disciples, 'He is risen from the dead; and lo, He goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see Him; lo, I have told you.'" And they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring His disciples word.
How great is our God, sing with me how great is our God
And all will sing how great, how great is our God
How great is our God, sing with me how great is our God
And all will sing how great, how great is our God
Name above all names, worthy of all praise
My heart will sing how great, my heart will sing how great
Is our God
The splendor of a king, clothed in majesty
Let all the earth rejoice, all the earth rejoice
He wraps Himself in light, and darkness tries to hide
And trembles at His voice, trembles at His voice
How great is our God, sing with me how great is our God
And all will see how great, how great is our God
Age to age He stands, and time is in His hands
Beginning and the End, beginning and the End
The Godhead Three in One, Father Spirit Son
The Lion and the Lamb, the Lion and the Lamb
How great is our God, sing with me how great is our God
And all will see how great, how great is our God
Name above all names, worthy of all praise
My heart will sing how great is our God
Name above all names, worthy of all praise
My heart will sing how great is our God
How great is our God, sing with me how great is our God
And all will see how great, how great, how great, how great
Is our God
