Mary, Did You Know?

A question put to the mother of Jesus gives this carol its shape: "Mary, did you know that your baby boy would one day walk on water?" Travis Cottrell's version repeats the question with a new miracle each time, "would give sight to a blind man," "would calm a storm with His hand," and "would save our sons and daughters." The first two come from Matthew 14:25 and Matthew 8:26.

A pair of lines turn the focus to the child himself. "This child that you delivered will soon deliver you?" and "when you kiss your little baby, you've kissed the face of God?" turn the question toward the child himself. The line "has come to make you new" gives the reason behind the miracles.

The final section lists what He will do, "the blind will see, the deaf will hear, the dead will live again, the lame will leap, the dumb will speak the praises of the Lamb," which follows Matthew 11:5. The title for Jesus in the last line, "the Lamb," recalls John 1:29, and the song ends by repeating "did you know?"
