Upendo

Three Swahili words carry this entire song — upendo (love), amani (peace), furaha (joy) — and Fanuel Sedekia never explains them, he just repeats each one until it becomes the whole verse. 'Upendo wa Yesu' (the love of Jesus) is followed immediately by 'kautoa uhai wake' (he gave his life), which is the one line in the song that grounds the abstract word in an actual event rather than a feeling. The structure moves in blocks — a run of love, then a run of peace, then joy — so each attribute gets isolated and sat with rather than blended into a single verse about Jesus being wonderful in general. That's a deliberately simple form, built for a congregation to pick up within seconds and sing without needing the words in front of them. The peace verse in particular echoes Jesus' own promise to leave a peace unlike anything the world offers, and pairing it with a stanza on love that names his death gives the repetition a backbone it would otherwise lack. It reads less like a written song and more like someone naming, one at a time, what they've received.
