Rock Of Ages

Song Meaning

A hymn built on the image of a rock split open as a hiding place, the singer asks to be tucked inside it. The second stanza turns to human effort and finds it useless: no amount of zeal or weeping can satisfy the law's demands, so salvation has to come from outside the self. That admission leads straight into the most striking lines, where the singer arrives with empty hands and nothing to offer, clinging to the cross, naked and asking for covering, helpless and asking for grace, foul and running to the fountain. The closing stanza stretches the same plea across a lifetime and past it — through the last breath, through closed eyes, through whatever world comes after — and lands again on the opening words, as if the only thing worth saying at the end is the thing said at the start. The repeated water and blood from the wounded side frame sin as a double problem, guilt and impurity, answered by a double cure. It is a song about having nothing and needing everything.

Rock of Ages, cleft for me
Let me hide myself in Thee
Let the water and the blood
From Thy wounded side which flowed
Be of sin the double cure
Save from wrath and make me pure

Not the labor of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law's demands
Could my zeal no respite know
Could my tears forever flow
All for sin could not atone
Thou must save, and Thou alone

Nothing in my hand I bring
Simply to the cross I cling
Naked, come to Thee for dress
Helpless look to Thee for grace
Foul, I to the fountain fly
Wash me, Savior, or I die

While I draw this fleeting breath
When mine eyes shall close in death
When I soar to worlds unknown
See Thee on Thy judgment throne
Rock of Ages, cleft for me
Let me hide myself in Thee
