Song Meaning
Chris Rice keeps the old spiritual's call-and-response shape intact, posing the same question twice in each stanza before landing on the line about trembling. The sequence moves from the crucifixion to the nailing to the tree, then to the burial in the tomb, then to the rolled-away stone, and finally to a personal turn: the washing away of sins. That last verse is where the song stops being a spectator's question and becomes a confession, folding the singer into the story rather than leaving them outside it. The repeated 'were you there' works less as a demand for historical eyewitness testimony than as an invitation to stand inside the events, and the trembling admits that proximity to the cross and the empty tomb is unsettling, not comfortable. Rice's reading is plain and unhurried, letting the repetition do the work. The stone being rolled away is the hinge the whole song leans on, and the closing image of sins washed clean ties the resurrection back to the listener's own need.

Were you there when crucified my Lord?
Were you there when crucified my Lord?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble
Were you there when crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Were you there when they rolled away the stone?
Were you there when they rolled away the stone?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble
Were you there when they rolled away the stone?
Were you there when He washed my sins away?
Were you there when He washed my sins away?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble
Were you there when He washed my sins away?
