Joseph Scriven's familiar hymn gets a plainspoken reading here, and its central move is an invitation rather than a doctrine: whatever weighs on you, carry it to God in prayer. The opening lines set the terms of the friendship — a companion who bears both sins and griefs — and the verses keep returning to that exchange, naming trials, temptations, weakness, and the specific ache of being despised or forsaken by friends. The most striking turn is the diagnosis in the first stanza: peace is something we forfeit, pain something we bear needlessly, and the cause is simply that we don't bring our burdens to the Lord. Later stanzas answer the obvious objection by pointing to a Savior who already knows every weakness and who takes the weary into His arms as a refuge.
