Walk On The Waves

Colton Dixon's “Walk On The Waves” begins with a stranger's sadness. The singer stops someone and asks for a name, what is behind the sorrow on their face, what broke their heart and what stole their faith. He tells them it will not always feel this way, though life is a boat that will not stop rocking.

The chorus gives the invitation: listen close, he is calling your name, saying walk on the waves. The listener is told to fight the tide, open their eyes, lift their face, and not be afraid, because he has their hands, their heart and their life. The second verse turns the lens inward. We all carry the weight of our failures, which keep us enslaved, and the question is what kind of life is lived in chains. The answer is a Savior who has torn them all away, followed by a choice to follow, since there is no other way. The song ends with a request to be led to the water and given faith. The scene of Peter stepping out of the boat is clear behind the lyrics, though the song speaks in the present tense to anyone who is stuck. The rising pop-rock arrangement and the hook make it fit a youth night, a baptism service or a talk about fear, and it is a good song to hear when a hard step is just ahead.
