God All By Yourself

Eben's "God All By Yourself" makes a point of praising God for existing rather than for acting — nearly every line circles back to who God is instead of what he's done, which is a deliberate contrast with most worship songs built around answered prayer or specific deliverance. "Age to age, You're still the same" echoes the letter to the Hebrews' description of Christ as the same yesterday, today, and forever, and the song leans on that unchanging nature as reason enough for praise on its own. The spoken aside "self-existent, strong and blessed one" is doing real theological work inside a simple repetitive structure — self-existence is the specific claim that God's being depends on nothing outside himself, unlike everything else that exists only because something else caused it. That idea, that God alone needs no other explanation for his own existence, is what the title's insistence on "all by Yourself" is actually pointing to, even though the lyrics never spell out the doctrine directly.
