Song Meaning

"Asante" — Swahili for "thank you" — repeats almost nothing but gratitude: asante Yesu, ninakupenda, kwa wema wako, over and over until the words start to function like breath. Evelyn Wanjiru wrote it out of a specific wait: ten years of trying for a child before the pregnancy the song was written to celebrate. That backstory sits underneath lines like "ametimiza ahadi yake ndani yangu" — he has fulfilled his promise inside me — and "Mungu wangu anajibu," my God answers. It's close to the shape of Hannah's story, a woman who prayed for years for a child and testified afterward that God had heard her, and the song leans on that parallel without spelling it out. There's no bridge, no key change, just the same handful of phrases sung until they've said everything they need to: gratitude, love, and the plain claim that God is faithful. For anyone still in the waiting part of a story like Evelyn's, that repetition works less like filler and more like patience set to melody.

Asante Yesu, Asante Yesu

Asante Yesu, Asante Yesu

Kwa wema wako, kwa wema wako

Kwa wema wako, kwa wema wako

Pokea sifa, pokea sifa

Pokea sifa, pokea sifa

Ninakupenda, ninakupenda

Ninakupenda, ninakupenda

Kwa wema wako, kwa wema wako

Kwa wema wako, kwa wema wako

Pokea sifa, pokea sifa

Pokea sifa, pokea sifa

Tazama yale Mungu ametenda

Ametimiza ahadi yake ndani yangu

Na sasa mimi nashuhudia

Ya kwamba Mungu wangu mwaminifu

Ya kwamba Mungu wangu anajibu

Ya kwamba Mungu wangu anaweza

Asante Yesu, Asante Yesu

Asante Yesu, Asante Yesu

Ninakupenda, ninakupenda

Ninakupenda, ninakupenda

Mwaminifu, mwaminifu

Mwaminifu, mwaminifu

Uombalo utapewa

Utafutalo utaona

Sikio lake si zito

Kusikia ombi lako

Furahia ndani ya Yesu

Mpe ibadi yako

Mwaminifu, mwaminifu

Mwaminifu, mwaminifu

Asante Yesu, Asante Yesu

Asante Yesu, Asante Yesu
