Green Pastures

Housefires' “Green Pastures” is a quiet song about God's presence in loneliness and fear. The first verse says that when the singer feels alone, he is never alone, because God is right beside him, standing in the fire and with the ashes and making something beautiful.

The chorus speaks of a God who is already ahead. “No matter where I go, You've already been. There is no shadow You aren't standing in.” Because of that, the singer says he will not fear tomorrow, since God knows what lies ahead. The last line of the chorus links the song to its title: green pastures and still waters are God's promises. The second verse names him as God with us, Emmanuel, from the beginning to the end, and describes how his whisper of peace stills the heart as the power of his presence is revealed. The bridge is a prayer to take his broken cup and fill it with love, and to make him whole, a line the group repeats. The simple structure and soft arrangement leave room for a room to sing slowly. It suits evening worship and moments when worry about the future is loud, and it gives plain words for asking to be held.
