Song Meaning
A weary wanderer is the speaker at the start of "I Thank God," who describes "wandering into the night, wanting a place to hide... this bag of bones." The first verse admits the fight cannot be won alone, "I'm slowly drifting, a vagabond," until a turn in the pre-chorus: "just when I ran out of road, I met a Man I didn't know, and He told me that I was not alone."
The chorus lists what that meeting did. "He picked me up, He turned me around, He placed my feet on solid ground" mirrors Psalm 40:2, and "He healed my heart, He changed my name, forever free, I'm not the same" draws on the new name of Isaiah 62:2. Each time the song says "I thank the Master, I thank the Savior, I thank God."
The second verse dismisses the old company: "burden and bitterness, you can just keep it moving... you ain't welcome here." The pre-chorus looks ahead, "from now 'til I walk the streets of gold, I'll sing of how You saved my soul," and calls the singer "this wayward son" who "has found his way back home," the story of Luke 15:20. The bridge shouts, "hell lost another one, I am free."
