Last Words

Jon Foreman's "Last Words" sits with grief rather than trying to solve it. The song circles the ache of losing someone, asking where the fire begins and where it goes, and admitting that fear is the feeling you're not supposed to show. The narrator wanted a friend, some kind of mercy, but the person they wanted most haunts and deserts them. What remains is a single instruction: keep breathing. That phrase becomes the song's anchor, repeated as the singer chooses to breathe in the breath left behind. The middle verses push back against the language of mourning itself — elegies, the things relatives say, words spit out like they were the cancer — none of it makes sense of the leaving.
