One And Only

Michael Ketterer addresses God in the most personal terms available: "my one and only cares for me." The opening verse lists what that care has done. There is a new name, all that he has done is forgiven, and the dirt is wiped from his eyes. The images of a changed identity and a cleansed past line up with 2 Corinthians 5:17, where anyone in Christ is a new creation.

The pre-chorus leaves each phrase open, "I'm reaching out for, I'm holding on to, I'm looking for one truth," and then fills it in with a single line: "I know it's You." The chorus widens from "I" to "we" with "Oh, how we need You" and a plea for heaven to break through. The resolve to be the one "shining like a light in the darkness of night" with a heart open wide echoes the light-of-the-world language of Matthew 5:14.

Near the end the lyric settles into repetition, "You know just what I need," then "You know what's best for me," trading elaboration for trust. That posture matches Matthew 6:8, where the Father knows what is needed before anyone asks, and the closing "Oh!" refrains let the same confidence ring out.
