Pressing On
Song Meaning
Weariness drives the opening: "I'm so tired of false comfort," "I'm so tired of second best." Michael Ketterer, with Will Reagan featured on the recording, answers by calling on the "Bread of life" and asking, "I want to feed on Your body / And find the only true life that exists." The verse then gives up the old life outright: "Everything I've ever known, I lay it down before You, Lord."
A morning, noon and night rhythm follows in "I want to choose You in the morning / I want to choose You in the day," and the plea "come and capture me again" admits that devotion needs renewing. The long refrain, "I'm pressing on, I'm moving on / I've made up my mind, You're what I want," reads like a decision made and repeated until it sticks.
Later lines add the cost: "We're letting go our rights," "Stepping out of fear / Out into the light," and the paradox "Sometimes we got to let go... To hold on." John 6:35 supplies the Bread of Life image, and Philippians 3:13-14 gives the forward-straining language of pressing on.
[Verse 1]
Bread of life
I'm so tired of false comfort
Bread of life
I'm so tired of second best
Bread of life
I want to feed on Your body
And find the only true life that exists
And find the only true life that exists
[Pre-Chorus]
Everything I've ever known
I lay it down before You, Lord
This world has nothing I desire
I believe there's more than this
I'm trusting in every word You say
It's the hope that keeps us moving
[Chorus]
I want to choose You in the morning
I want to choose You in the day
I want to choose You when I lay my head down
And I want to choose You in the morning
I want to choose You in the day
I want to choose You when I lay my head down
[Bridge]
Bread of life, come and capture me again
Bread of life, come and capture me again
[Pre-Chorus]
Everything I've ever known
I lay it down before You, Lord
This world has nothing I desire
I believe there's more than this
I'm trusting in every word You say
It's the hope that keeps us moving
Everything I've ever known
I lay it down before You, Lord
This world has nothing I desire
And I believe there's more than this
I'm trusting in every word You say
It's the hope that keeps us moving
[Refrain]
I'm pressing on, I'm moving on
I've made up my mind, You're what I want
I'm pressing on, I'm moving on
I've made up my mind, You're what I want
I'm pressing on, I'm moving on
I've made up my mind, You're what I want
I'm pressing on, I'm moving on
I've made up my mind, You're what I want
[Verse 2]
We're holding nothing back
We're letting go our rights
Stepping out of fear
Out into the light
We're holding nothing back
We're letting go our rights
Stepping out of fear
Out into the light
[Tag]
Sometimes we got to let go, let go
Sometimes we got to let go, let go
Sometimes we got to let go, let go
To hold on
Sometimes we got to let go, let go
Sometimes we got to let go, let go
Sometimes we got to let go, let go
To hold on
[Refrain]
I'm pressing on, I'm moving on
I've made up my mind, You're what I want
I'm pressing on, I'm moving on
I've made up my mind, You're what I want
I'm pressing on, I'm moving on
I've made up my mind, You're what I want
I'm pressing on, I'm moving on
I've made up my mind, You're what I want
