Deep End
Song Meaning
Told in the third person, "Deep End" follows a girl who dives into the ocean and does not come up the way onlookers expect. Newsboys write it as a baptism scene: "She's diving down," "Hands above her / Held her," and after "Nineteen years" the people around her are "letting go." What looks like drowning ("I think she's gonna drown") is announced in the same breath as arrival: "It's like it's over / But it's just begun."
The chorus reverses the fear, with "She's going off / The deep end" and "falling into your hands," and it ends on "She's been lost and found." Verse two adds specifics: "Scars on her elbows" and an old song turning inside her, "how sweet the sound." The bridge names the step of faith, tells her not to be scared, and has her speak "the name / Above all other names," while "you drop the blame."
The closing lines gather forgiveness and restoration, "all the times she'd disobey" met by "the ocean of your grace." Romans 6:4 on being buried with Christ through baptism, Luke 15:24 on the lost who is found, and 2 Corinthians 5:17 on becoming a new creation sit closest to the lyric.
[Verse 1]
She's diving down
Gonna make her home now
The ocean
She's done with living her life
On the ground
She's sinking down
Hands above her
Held her
Nineteen years
And now their letting go
Tomorrow will be 'round
And everyone will see
No tragedy
It's like it's over
But it's just begun
[Chorus]
She's going off
The deep end
Breaking from the crowd
She's way in over her head
I think she's gonna drown
She's going off
The deep end
The search is over now
She's falling into your hands
It's all or nothing
There's no guessing
She's been lost and found
[Verse 2]
She's diving down
Scars on her elbows
The wind blows
An old song spins around inside
'how sweet the sound'
To be living
And dying
Looks like it's over
But it's just begun
[Bridge]
To take this step of faith
Don't need to be scared
Turn worry into wonder
Dissolve the fear
She's steppin' out
And you drop the blame
As she speaks the name
Above all other names
[Outro]
To be lost and found
Her world has turned
Upside down
Her soul restored
With salt like rain
From all of the things
That you forgave
And all the times she'd disobey
She's diving in the ocean of your grace
