Love Like I Mean It

Newsboys start with an honest confession rather than a declaration: "I have good intentions, don't always turn them into action... I speak love, it's easy enough, but words are not what love is made of." It's a rare thing for a worship song to admit the gap between what it says and what it actually does — most skip straight to the resolution.

1 John 3:18 names that exact gap: "let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth." The song's hook — "I wanna love like I mean it" — isn't a claim that the singer has arrived, it's a stated intention to close a distance he's already admitted exists.

What gives that intention weight is a specific memory: "I know what mercy feels like, I've seen my own life pulled from the ashes." Isaiah 61:3 describes God giving "beauty for ashes" — not abstractly, but as a real exchange someone has actually experienced. That's the logic underneath the whole song: having received love that showed up in action rather than just words is exactly why the singer can't settle for offering less than that himself. "I could speak with the voice of angels... but I wanna do more than that."
