Newsboys open by naming a specific kind of hedging rather than describing faith in general: "she's been dazed and induced, wants a part-time God for the private use, but she won't take a stand 'cause she might get tagged as a closet Jesus fan."

"He's displaced and unglued, scared that faith in God could be misconstrued, but the cross makes him wish that his spine was more than a school of jellyfish" mirrors the first verse with a second character caught in the same private hesitation.

"Sign on, the time is drawing near, this is surely a banner year to be a public witness" pushes back against both characters' private-only faith, echoing Jesus' own promise that whoever acknowledges Him before others will be acknowledged before the Father.

"The lines are drawn and clear, there's no straddling fences here, we're going public with this" closes the chorus on the same challenge repeated throughout — not a demand for perfect courage, just an unwillingness to let faith stay hidden indefinitely.
