Song Meaning

The Newsboys' “Victory” is a short song assembled from scripture, and its verses are mostly direct quotation. It opens with an instruction to “turn your back on things of the world” and a proposal, “Let's have our victory through Jesus.” The next three lines are Proverbs 3:5-6 as written: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall make your paths straight.”

The second verse sets two roads side by side. “There is a way that seems right unto a man / But it will end in death,” the singer says, then contrasts it with the walk chosen by the Lord, where “He shall give His angels charge to watch over you.” Both verses end with the same line, “If any man be in Christ he is new.” The chorus is a group declaration, “We have the victory through Jesus,” followed by a call to “stand and proclaim His name throughout the earth.”

Proverbs 3:5-6 and Proverbs 14:12 (the way that seems right) supply the verses, and Psalm 91:11 gives the angels. The new-creation line is 2 Corinthians 5:17.

Now turn your back on things of the world
Let's have our victory through Jesus
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
In all your ways acknowledge Him
And He shall make your paths straight
If any man be in Christ he is new

[Chorus]
We, we have the victory through Jesus
We, we have the victory through Jesus
Let's stand and proclaim His name
Throughout the earth
Throughout the earth

There is a way that seems right unto a man
But it will end in death I say
The way I walk is chosen by the Lord
And He shall give His angels charge
To watch over you
If any man he take in Christ he is new

[Chorus]
