You Are My King (Amazing Love)
Song Meaning
Newsboys perform “You Are My King (Amazing Love)” as a short declaration of what the cross accomplished. Each of the opening lines pairs the singer's standing with what Jesus went through: “I'm forgiven because You were forsaken, I'm accepted, You were condemned.”
The third line says the singer is “alive and well” because the Spirit lives within, and the reason given is plain: “Because You died and rose again.” The chorus then turns to a question of wonder, “Amazing love, how can it be, that You, my King, should die for me?” The answer the singer offers is a response of honor, “It's my joy to honor You, in all I do.” The song ends by repeating “You are my King,” which makes it easy for a congregation to join without needing a lyric sheet. The exchange in the opening lines, where Christ takes the place of the believer, is the center of the song, and the chorus is what the believer says back to him. Its simple structure has helped it spread through many churches over the years.
No condemnation for those in Christ is Romans 8:1. Being accepted in the Beloved is Ephesians 1:6, and Christ suffering for sins to bring us to God is 1 Peter 3:18.
I'm accepted, You were condemned
I'm alive and well, Your Spirit is within me
Because You died and rose again
Amazing love, how can it be
That You, my King, should die for me?
Amazing love, I know it's true
It's my joy to honor You
In all I do, to honor You
You are my King
You are my King
Jesus, You are my King
You are my King
