Kelele Za Ushindi

"Kelele Za Ushindi" opens as a call-and-response question rather than a statement: "hizi ni kelele za nini," what are these shouts for, "mmepigana vita gani," what battle have you fought? The answer comes back the same way each time — "amepigana Bwana sio sisi," the Lord fought, not us. Paul Clement builds the whole song around that one distinction, crediting the Lord specifically for a victory the congregation didn't achieve by their own strength, close to the instruction given to Israel before the Red Sea crossing to stand still and watch God fight on their behalf. "Ametupigania" — he fought for us — and "ametupa ushindi" — he gave us victory — repeat as the chorus's two halves, cause and result stated back to back. There's no description of what the battle actually was; the song keeps that detail out entirely, which makes the declaration usable for whatever fight the person singing it happens to be in at the time.
