We are The Same

Paul Clement, Angel Magoti and Joel Lwaga trade lines in “We Are The Same,” a Tanzanian-flavored gospel track whose hook is a simple invitation: “Me an you let's build the love.” Each singer takes a turn on “My life carries your blessings / and yours my blessings,” so the idea of shared fortune is spoken in several voices before the verses begin.

Clement's verse opens in Swahili with three images of a world turned upside down (“Mvua linanyesha jua linawaka,” rain falling while the sun burns) before switching to English and an argument for unity. “We are of the same image / So to kill me is to kill yourself,” he says, and boundaries are “not for division / They are meant to color the unity.” The turn at the end is about power: “Love is powerful,” able “to shun evil.”

Genesis 1:27, people made in God's image, is the basis for the “same image” line, and 1 John 4:7, “Let us love one another, for love comes from God,” matches the song's push to build rather than divide. The credits add J. Kavishe, Zoravo, C.John and The Voice.
