Simunye (We Are One)

Unity is asked for in the face of division. PJ Morton, joined by the Soweto Spiritual Singers, sings that "it seems as though we're widening the divide" and answers with a plea to "close the gap of hate while there's still time." The Zulu word of the title, Simunye, meaning "we are one," runs through the song in call-and-response lines marked by "Ahe" and "Yebo."

Fear is named as the obstacle: nothing changes "if we're led by fear," and "now's the time for us to take a stand." The comfort offered is simple and physical, "just take my hand," along with the promise that "you're never alone." Each chorus lands on the same claim, "we are stronger / When we're together."

God is not named in the words, but the vision of peace and shared strength lines up with Psalm 133:1 on the goodness of living together in unity, Ephesians 4:3 on keeping the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace, and Galatians 3:28 on being one in Christ.
