Nasempini

Ayanda Ntanzi's "Nasempini" ("In the battle") opens with a direct paraphrase of Psalm 23 in isiZulu — "Noma ngihamba, ngihamba esigodini sokufa, angiyokwesaba" (even if I walk, walk through the valley of death, I will not fear) — naming the source of that confidence plainly: "Jesu uyinqaba yami," Jesus is my fortress. The title phrase, "nasempini," locates that confidence specifically in conflict rather than in calm; the song isn't describing peace after the battle but trust held onto during it. The chorus builds two images on top of that opening claim — "uyisihlangu sami" (you are my shield) and "ungumpheme wokuphephela" (you are my refuge and shelter) — both defensive, protective pictures rather than triumphant ones, fitting a song about walking through danger rather than having already walked past it. The second verse shifts from protection to permanence: "Jesu dwala lami, yebo laphakade mina, mangiqashe njalo kuwena" — Jesus my rock, forever, let me always rely on you — extending the song's claim from a single battle into an ongoing posture of trust. The repeated line "ungumpheme wokuphephela," sung seven times in a row at the song's center, functions as the resting point the whole song has been building toward: not victory declared, but shelter claimed.
