Holding On

Wordless chanting, "oh oh oh," leads into a statement of resolve: "My faith is stronger than it's ever been before." VaShawn Mitchell fixes his gaze on God as the one who can "hold the world in the palm of your hand" and who "know[s] my ending way before I begin." That foreknowledge becomes the ground for his steadiness, so the verse closes on a promise to "forever keep my eyes on you."

The hook is a vow made ahead of any trouble. "No matter what comes my way / I will never lose my way," he sings, and then, "I will keep holding on / to you / and nothing can separate us." The repeated phrasing works like a congregational pledge, with the line about separation giving the song its anchor.

A later section moves from vow to description. "You are the source of my strength / you are the strength of my life / you are my shepherd and I have no fear," the singer says, and the end of the song becomes a long vamp of worship, with "forever and always, I will worship, I will praise" repeated until it fades. Romans 8:38-39 matches the claim of inseparability, Psalm 23:1 the shepherd, and Isaiah 46:10 the God who declares the end from the beginning.
