We The Kingdom builds almost the entire song out of a single grammatical move — "what if" — repeated across a dozen small, specific risks: "what if I got real honest... what if I opened up my heart and let you see in... what if I took my mask off." None of these are dramatic confessions; they're the ordinary-sized honesty most people avoid precisely because it's small enough to seem optional.

"I don't wanna be a mannequin" is the line the rest of the song is explaining — a mannequin looks presentable and feels nothing, which is exactly the tradeoff the song is refusing. The second verse pushes further into discomfort: "what if I wasn't perfect, what if I was just a mess... I'm so tired of pretending." Tired, not ashamed — the emotion here is exhaustion with the performance, not guilt over the person underneath it.

The chorus names the cost of all that hiding directly: "what I wouldn't give to be known." That's the song's actual want, stated once and repeated until it sounds less like a wish and more like a decision. "Coming out of my cages, stepping down from my stages" isn't a single dramatic exit — it's the sum of every small "what if" the verses already asked.
