Deep End

We The Kingdom's “Deep End” is an energetic call to stop playing it safe. The opening lines say they have been jumping in puddles of rain, that it is time for something to change, and that they are never going back to the shallow places again.

The verses give a series of instructions: swim out past the reef, where there is no land and nothing to see, hold your breath and let your spirit soar. The chorus pictures diving in the deep end, going down to the ground below, where sweet water will free the soul. A call follows to spread arms wide and come along, with nothing to lose and nothing to prove, breaking through the waves head first without thinking twice. Near the end the song asks whether the listener's soul is on fire and tells them to find out why they are alive and to free their inner child. The water imagery points to faith and baptism, so the song reads as an invitation to give more of the heart to God and to leave comfortable limits behind. The fast beat and group chant make it fit a youth night, a baptism service or an outdoor gathering, and it will suit any listener who feels that their faith has stayed in the shallows too long.

Putting out into deep water is Luke 5:4. Stepping out of the boat is Matthew 14:28-29, and rising to new life through baptism is Romans 6:4.
