We The Kingdom doesn't romanticize the word in its title — "they'll make you, then break you, and bring you right down to your knees," the chorus admits before ever getting to anything positive. Family here is presented as costly first, redemptive second, never pretending the two can be separated.

The honesty continues into the verses: "some days I'm thankful and others I'm angry," admitting resentment alongside gratitude in the same breath. What keeps the song from tipping into complaint is a single line of surrender — "thank God I don't get to choose" — treating the lack of control as mercy rather than misfortune.

Psalm 68:6 describes God as the one who "setteth the solitary in families," framing even a difficult family as something placed rather than accidental, and Paul tells the Colossians to "forbear one another, and forgive one another" in Colossians 3:13 — advice that fits a family that "breaks" as much as it builds. The closing promise, "I'll always love you" to brother, sister, father, and mother alike, lands as a choice renewed rather than an easy feeling.
