Dead Man Walking
Song Meaning
Jeremy Camp frames salvation as a resurrection in miniature. The first verse starts with someone digging for freedom "six feet underground," "under the weight of all of my sin," fighting a fight he "couldn't win" until the turn: "Then You rescued me / Now I can breathe." The chorus plays on the title, moving from "I was a dead man walking" to "a man walking with You," and from "a blind man falling" to feeling the life Christ is calling him to.
Later lines make the change physical. Love "ran into my veins," Christ is "the key to all of my chains," and the singer is "not a slave" anymore. The chorus keeps returning to the heartbeat, "Putting the beat in my heart again," ending on being loved "back to life."
A short bridge shifts the credit away from the singer: "I have tasted and I've seen the wonders of Your heart / I do not deserve a thing, but that's just who You are." That admission matches Ephesians 2:4-5 and 2:8, where God makes the dead alive by grace, and the language of chains and freedom echoes John 8:36. The line about tasting and seeing draws on Psalm 34:8. It is a testimony song, plain about where the rescue came from.
[Verse 1]
Freedom was something I never found
Trying to find six feet underground
Under the weight of all of my sin
Fighting the fight that I couldn't win
Then You rescued me
Now I can breathe
[Chorus]
I was a dead man walking
Until I was a man walking with You
I was a blind man falling
Until I felt the life You're calling me to
Pulling me out of the darkness
Pulling me out of the lies
Putting the beat in my heart again
I was a dead man walking
Until You loved this dead man walking back to life
[Verse 2]
I look for the words but cannot explain
A new kind of love ran into my veins
You are the key to all of my chains
To all that I was now I'm not a slave
Then You rescued me
And now I can breathe
[Chorus]
I was a dead man walking
Until I was a man walking with You
I was a blind man falling
Until I felt the life You're calling me to
Pulling me out of the darkness
Pulling me out of the lies
Putting the beat in my heart again
I was a dead man walking
Until You loved this dead man walking back to life
[Bridge]
I have tasted and I've seen the wonders of Your heart
I do not deserve a thing, but that's just who You are
[Chorus]
I was a dead man walking
Until I was a man walking with You
I was a blind man falling
Until I felt the life You're calling me to
Pulling me out of the darkness
Pulling me out of the lies
Putting the beat in my heart again
I was a dead man walking
Until You loved this dead man walking back to life
[Outro]
(I was a dead man walking
Until You loved this dead man back to life)
