Love Lifted Me
Song Meaning
Phil Thompson's “Love Lifted Me” is a short worship song that starts with glory to God in the highest. It is a different piece from the older hymn of the same name by James Rowe, and the chorus here is built around a testimony of rescue.
The singer says that when nothing else could help, God came and rescued him, and that his love lifted him. Because of that he is free to sing of God's love, and the line hallelujah follows. The central section is a build in three parts, stating that the love of God is higher than heaven, deeper than oceans and greater than mountains. Each phrase repeats the comparison three times, which gives the congregation a chance to grow the volume with each repeat. The final lines return to the picture of a person who was all alone and down and out, and they connect the ending back to the first verse. The song is not long, and that is part of its usefulness. A worship team can place it between two longer songs, or use it as an extended response by repeating the build. The simple structure makes it easy for a congregation to sing after one hearing, and the contrast between the low point and the lifting gives people a way to put their own story into the song.
Being lifted from the pit is Psalm 40:2. The width, length, height and depth of Christ's love are in Ephesians 3:18-19, and being drawn out of many waters is Psalm 18:16.
Glory, glory to God
When nothing else could help
You came and rescued me
Your love lifted me
Your love lifted me
Your love lifted me
I am free to sing of Your love
Glory, glory to God in the highest
Glory, glory to God
When nothing else could help
You came and rescued me
Your love lifted me
Your love lifted me
Your love lifted me
I am free to sing of Your love
Your love lifted me
Your love lifted me
Your love lifted me
I am free to sing of Your love
Hallelujah
It's Your love
It's Your love
It's higher, higher, higher than heaven
Deeper, deeper, deeper than oceans
Greater, greater, greater than mountains
Your love
Higher, higher, higher than heaven
Deeper, deeper, deeper than oceans
Greater, greater, greater than mountains
Your love
Higher, higher, higher than heaven
Deeper, deeper, deeper than oceans
Greater, greater, greater than mountains
Your love
Higher, higher, higher than heaven
Deeper, deeper, deeper than oceans
Greater, greater, greater than mountains
Your love
When nothing else could help
You came and rescued me
When nothing else could help
You came and rescued me
When I was all alone
You came and rescued me
When I was all alone
You came and rescued me
When I was down and out
You came and rescued me
When I was down and out
You came and rescued me
When I was down and out
You came and rescued me
Your love lifted me
Your love lifted me
Your love lifted me
I am free to sing of Your love
