Song Meaning

A moment of looking back opens "Red Blanket (When Times Got Hard)": "Sitting here, don't know how I made it over, wondering, wondering, have I lost my way, which road should I take, is this my fate?" Phil Thompson then names what carried him, "you placed inside of me a storm kit that I've held on to, my own proverbial red blanket," an emergency supply that turns out to be faith.

The chorus lists the contents. "Riches unspeakable, love that's unstoppable, more than you'll ever know, You gave me Christ, weapons with which to fight, You taught me sacrifice, love that will never die." The "unspeakable riches" and the weapons for the fight are phrases near Ephesians 3:8 and Ephesians 6:13.

The refrain is the lesson, "and when times got hard, You taught me how to worship God." The second verse looks back at what he has been through and says what he learned: "through the storm and in the famine, I can't lose my faith, and I'll give God praise," close to Philippians 4:12 on knowing how to be in want, and Habakkuk 3:17-18 on praising God when the fields are empty.

Sitting here
Don't know how I made it over
Wondering, wondering
Have I lost my way
Which road should I take
Is this my fate

But you placed inside of me
A storm-kit that I've held on to
My own proverbial red blanket
And when it seems all hope was lost

You gave me hope
Riches unspeakable
Love that's unstoppable
More than you'll ever know
You gave me Christ
Weapons with which to fight
You taught me sacrifice
Love that will never die

And when times got hard
You taught me how to worship God
When times got hard
You taught me how to worship God

Looking back
Thinking of all the stuff I've been through
Pondering what could have been
But I've learned along the way
That through the storm and in the famine
I can't lose my faith
And I'll give God praise

But you placed inside of me
A storm-kit that I've held on to
My own proverbial red blanket
And when it seems all hope was lost

You gave me hope
Riches unspeakable
Love that's unstoppable
More than you'll ever know
You gave me Christ
Weapons with which to fight
You taught me sacrifice
Love that will never die

When times got hard
You taught me how to worship God
When times got hard
You taught me how to worship God

You gave me hope
Riches unspeakable
Love that's unstoppable
More than you'll ever know
You gave me Christ
Weapons with which to fight
You taught me sacrifice
Love that will never die

When times got hard
You taught me how to worship God
I know when times get hard
That I can get on my knees
That I can look to you Lord
Oh, I worship God
